The Best Cities to See on a Texas Hill Country Road Trip

Dripping Springs

Your first trip is to Dripping Springs, which is a quick 20-minute drive from Wimberley, Texas. Dripping Springs is home to Hamilton Pool Preserve, a breathtaking swimming hole in the Hill Country. Prepare for a 0.25-mile hike along a winding dirt trail through a serene forest. When you round the final corner, the trees part to reveal the still, crystal clear waters of the swimming hole. Part of the pool is covered by a wide, tall rock formation, in which water cascades over its ledge to form a small waterfall. It’s a scene unlike anything else, and provides the perfect outing in Dripping Springs.

San Marcos

In 23-minutes from Hotel Flora and Fauna or 48-minutes from Dripping Springs, you’ll arrive in San Marcos, TX. There are endless ways you can explore this unique city.

If you love history, stop by the Central Texas Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. The structure itself is a vintage hanger that was built in 1942. Enter it to view a plane used in World War II, and even get the chance to go inside it.

Other fantastic attractions include a visit to Wonder World Cave & Park, where you can tour a cave created by an ancient earthquake. You’re also sure to get an adrenaline rush at the Longhorn Racing Academy driving luxury cars on a private race track.

If you prefer, choose to take it easy by floating down the San Marcos river with Texas State Tubes, or enjoy a tour of Spring Lake with Meadows Center Glass-Bottom Boat Tours.

You have to take the 30-minute drive to Gruene as one of your road trips. It feels like an old, western town straight out of the movies.

Make sure you pack your dancing shoes, because one of the main attractions in the nearby town is Gruene Hall. Enjoy toe-tapping country music performed by some amazing local and regional artists at this fun dance hall. Even if you don’t like to dance, you can still appreciate the live music while sipping on an ice-cold beer from the bar.

But, that’s not all. Gruene is also home to The Grapevine, a beautiful wine tasting room with a gorgeous outdoor patio surrounded by old oaks. Sip on local varietals while listening to live music. This establishment is a hidden gem in the heart of the sleepy town!

Blanco, Texas, located 30-minutes away, offers a peaceful outing. One wonderful excursion you should take is a trip to Hill Country Lavender, which is a farm of rolling hills of the delicate plant. The best time to visit is from May to July!

You should also consider going to Blanco State Park. This is a great place to set up a picnic amongst the man-made falls within the Blanco River. If you want to beat the Texas heat, though, feel free to jump right in!

If you’re already in Blanco, Fredericksburg is only 40-minutes away. Go ahead and make your way over and enjoy an array of attractions from viewing the National Museum of the Pacific War to a wine tasting excursion at Lost Draw Cellars. While out exploring the Texas Hill Country, you should consider making this stop!

Everyone has heard of Austin, the state capitol of Texas! Take a 35-minute drive from the hotel and enjoy a free tour of the capitol any day of the week.

Lady Bird Lake is also a fun place to view Austin’s natural landscape. Here, you can enjoy some lovely hiking trails to take advantage of the gorgeous weather in the Texas Hill Country while gazing out at the water. Or, if the water is beckoning you, you can also take a kayak tour to get in a little more exercise and view the lake from a new perspective. There is also a river cruise boat ride you can embark on to just sit back, relax, and take in the view!
